Secret Caribbean with Trevor McDonald

Episode 1

Islands that illustrate the huge contrasts in the Caribbean. Trevor visits a man who has long been selling the Caribbean dream to the superrich – Richard Branson. Necker Island is a family home to the Bransons but also a £30,000 a night luxury getaway for those that can afford it. Trevor also gets a rare glimpse of Richard’s latest Caribbean venture – Mosquito Island. From there, Trevor travels to the largest island in the Caribbean – Cuba – where there are no billionaires and discovers what life is like for those living in this colourful and elegant bastion of communism. And finally in this episode to oil rich Trinidad, where Trevor was born, for the biggest day of the year – Carnival. It’s an explosion of colour and noise to rival any celebration anywhere in the world.

Episode 2

Caribbean islands defined by wealth - those that have it, and those that will do anything to get it. Trevor travels to perhaps the most expensive private Island in the whole Caribbean, Musha Cay, owned by the enigmatic magician David Copperfield. David shows Trevor its secrets - from a remarkable Houdini museum, to a breathtaking sandbar of pure white sand that appears for just 4 hours a day in the middle of the ocean. And then on to perhaps the most famous Caribbean island of them all – Jamaica. Trevor is given rare access to a high security prison in Kingston where he meets many young British women serving sentences for drugs smuggling. A world away from Jamaica, Trevor’s final destination in this episode is the luxury island of Barbados where he meets the man who is said to have bought up most of it, the eccentric Sir Charles Williams, and his pet pig Hogey.

Episode 3

Caribbean islands that have been dramatically shaped by the forces of nature. Trevor begins in the former paradise, Montserrat, decimated in the 90s by a massive volcanic eruption. He meets the courageous residents who are slowly rebuilding their island and their lives. And he is given a tour by Sir George Martin of the now derelict Air Studios where many of the biggest bands in the world used to come and record hit records. Trevor travels on to Grenada to witnesses one of the rarest sights in the natural world, near extinct Giant Leatherback turtles coming to lay their eggs on a remote beach in the middle of the night. And then on to the Bahamas and the extraordinary Harbour Island where some 11 billionaires have homes. Trevor meets India Hicks, the member of the British Royal Family who has made a home here and refuses to leave it despite the constant threat of hurricanes. Finally, Trevor considers keeping a piece of the Caribbean forever, taking a tour of a nearby island for sale - a bargain at just $400,000.
